October 02, 1998. Friday. No time. Day 3. 72,660 miles on the odometer. 12:45 pm. Took a swim at the hot springs for about 30 minutes. There were a few kids. The owner didn't charge me any money to camp out because I arrived at 1:30 am, even though I offered to pay. Swimming in the hot springs cost $4 Canadian. This park is privately owned. Arrived in White Horse. This time, got to hike around the city center a bit. The second time here I liked. Guess it's because the first time I encountered a bunch of drunks in a bar which was unappealing. Bought something to eat at Tim Horton's restaurant. Stopped at the souvenir store and the post office. This was the first post office I have evered encountered which sold candy bars. Bought a sticker for the roofbox at Special Discoveries. Gasoline is actually cheaper immediately outside of White Horse than it is inside the city. Odd. Royal Bank charges a $2.50 fee to exchange money while none of the other banks do. Got back on Highway 1 after White Horse and headed on out. 180 kilometers before Watson Lake it began to snow. Had to slow down. Even down to 35 mph. At Watson Lake, I would take a right off Highway 1 and go south on Highway 37. Driving into the snow with my high beams looked as if it was a special effect in a science fiction movie. Looks like thousands of stars coming right at me. After driving 10 miles on Highway 37 it finally stopped snowing. I had driven through almost 150 miles of snow and snowfall by this point. Two reasons I didn't want to stop during the snowfall: I could be snowed in by morning and my car may not start in the severe cold weather. Plus with the current level of snow on the road, my tires can still bite into the snow and have some grip. Stopped at Boya Lake Provincial Park around 11:30 pm. Four other cars were here. The Milepost trip planner says this park has a ranger only for the summer and part of spring, so it's free at this time of year to just camp. Hopped in the backseat and wrapped the 2 sleeping bags around me.
