1991 Specialized Rockhopper

1991 Specialized Rockhopper frame purchased for $15 at the monthly Frankenbike swap meet held in Austin, Texas. The bike was missing wheels, rear derailleur, seatpost, saddle, pedals, and some cable housing. Unfortuntely, although it came with integrated brake levers with underbar shifters, one of the shifters was broken. In addition, the stem, handlebar, and cantilever brakesets were extremely heavy. Most of the parts were purchased at the swap meet with some parts taken off a bike purchased from the flea market for $30.

These '91 Rockhoppers came with the same triple-butted DirectDrive cromoly forks as the Stumpjumpers, but the Rockhoppers' dropouts have lawyer lips.

• Frame and Direct Drive fork with Shimano 400 LX front derailleur, biospace crankset, and unknown headset $15.
• Shimano LX shifer/brake levers $15 (needed to fix internal spring).

• Shimano Alivio cantilever brakeset $1.
• Marin Lite 27.0 seatpost $5.
• Shimano XT rear derailleur $10. More info on this derailleur.
• Shimano LX wheels with Nashbar rims and 12-32 7-speed casette; Vetta Lite saddle taken from flea market bike; about $20 prorated.
• Seatclamp binder bolt $3 (new).
• KMC 8-speed chain $5 (new).
• Zefal plastic water bottle holder $2.
• Grips and plastic end plugs $3 (new).
• Tioga Factory XC Slick low-rolling resistance tires $8 for both (shown with Hutchinson Mosquito tires).
• Reused old cables and housing.
